Former Somali presidents Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo and Sharif Sheikh Ahmed have expressed deep concern over the government’s perceived irresponsibility in addressing the surge in clan clashes, which have erupted in over 20 areas across multiple regions.Sharif Sheikh Ahmed criticized the administration of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, stating that the violence has escalated since he took office in May 2022. “The government’s lack of decisive action has allowed these conflicts to spiral out of control, threatening national stability,” Sharif said.Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo also condemned the ongoing bloodshed, describing it as “senseless violence that achieves nothing but grief and destruction.” He called on the government and local leaders to prioritize unity and reconciliation efforts, saying, “Leaders must lead by example to reduce tribalism and foster solidarity among Somali people.“Farmaajo voiced alarm over reports of Somali National Army personnel being targeted based on clan affiliations in Hirshabelle, warning that such incidents undermine the integrity of the nation’s security forces. “The Somali National Army is a symbol of national unity and must remain above clan divisions,” he emphasized.The former presidents urged Somali elders, religious leaders, and community influencers to intervene and mediate peace in conflict-hit regions. Farmaajo concluded his appeal with a prayer for peace, calling on all Somalis to embrace dialogue and end the hostilities.The ongoing clashes, fueled by longstanding grievances and political tensions, have displaced thousands and heightened Somalia’s humanitarian crisis.
