Mogadishu(Mogadishu24)-In a landmark decision, the Green Climate Fund (GCF) has approved $100 million to finance a Climate Resilient Agriculture project in Somalia.The funding, announced during the GCF’s 40th Board Meeting, marks the approval of Somalia’s first single-country project, making it one of the fastest approvals in the history of the GCF.The initiative aims to bolster Somalia’s agricultural sector against the impacts of climate change by providing tailored climate finance. The project will focus on building resilience through innovative, sustainable agricultural practices that address the country’s vulnerabilities to droughts and other climate-related challenges.Khadija Makhzoumi, Somalia’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change, expressed her gratitude to the GCF Board and CEO Mafalda Duarte for fast-tracking this critical initiative.“Access to tailored, vertical, and horizontal climate finance is key to transforming our climate commitments into real, on-the-ground impacts,” said Makhzoumi.“Our strategy is clear: commitments, partnerships, and a whole-of-government and society approach to combating climate impacts in Somalia.”The Somali government reaffirmed its dedication to implementing sustainable solutions to address climate challenges.
