Mogadishu(Mogadishu24)-Prime Minister of the Federal Government of Somalia, Hamza Abdi Barre has lauded the significant role played by Operation Atalanta in bolstering the safety and security of the Somali maritime domain.

During a visit to witness a drill conducted by the Somali Coast Guard, Prime Minister Hamza emphasized the importance of enhancing the capabilities of the Coast Guard to effectively manage the security and defense responsibilities of Somalia’s maritime areas.

He praised the European Union for providing advanced training and expertise to the Coast Guard troops, enabling them to secure Somalia’s coastal regions effectively.

While aboard a vessel off the Somali coast, Prime Minister Hamza expressed gratitude to officials from Operation Atalanta for their support in defending the national coasts against illicit activities.

He acknowledged the operation’s pivotal role since its establishment in 2008 in promoting the safety and comprehensive security of the Somali Sea, saying it has been instrumental in combating piracy, ensuring maritime safety, combating illegal fishing, and mitigating maritime crimes.

“Since its inception in 2008, Operation Atalanta has been a cornerstone in promoting the safety and comprehensive security of the Somali Sea, crucial for thwarting piracy, ensuring maritime safety, combating illegal fishing, and mitigating maritime crimes,” he said in a statement.
