Muqdisho, Somalia May 5, 2025 The House of the People of the Federal Parliament of Somalia held its regular session today and passed the second reading of the draft bill on civil registration and vital statistics, prepared by the Ministry of Interior.

The bill was presented to the house by MP Nuur Ahmed Diiriye (Nuur Afeey), who is the acting chairperson and also the deputy chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Interior, Federal Affairs, and Security.

During the debate, several MPs proposed amendments to various sections of the bill, citing the need for a review based on the current circumstances. These suggestions were particularly reinforced by the Second Deputy Speaker of the House, Abdullahi Omar Abshirow, who instructed the Committee on Interior to incorporate the MPs’ views and recommendations before the bill proceeds to its third reading.

This draft bill is considered essential for establishing a systematic approach to the collection of demographic and civil status data, which is foundational for effective public policy planning.

The bill is expected to be returned to the House for its third reading after the proposed revisions and inputs are integrated.
