Djibouti(Mogadishu24)-The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the Government of Kenya have voiced serious concerns over escalating conflicts in both the Republic of Sudan and the Middle East.

IGAD’s Executive Secretary, Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, condemned the violence in Sudan, where civilians, aid workers, and critical infrastructure, including health centers and diplomatic missions, are caught in the crossfire.

IGAD emphasized the urgent need for a ceasefire, adherence to international humanitarian law, and the protection of civilians, with particular attention to women, children, and the elderly.

Dr. Gebeyehu also denounced the attack on the UAE Ambassador’s residence in Khartoum as a violation of international law and an affront to the principles of peaceful diplomacy. The conflict in Sudan, which began in April last year, has led to massive displacement, infrastructure destruction, and hundreds of deaths.

Meanwhile, Kenya expressed grave concern over the recent developments in the Middle East since October 1, 2024, particularly for the Kenyan diaspora in Israel, Iran, Lebanon, and other parts of the region. The Kenyan government is closely monitoring the situation due to its potential impact on global oil prices and the Eastern African economies.

Kenyans residing in the Middle East have been advised to register their presence with Kenyan diplomatic missions. Kenya called on all parties to exercise restraint and seek peaceful conflict resolution, as stipulated in the United Nations Charter.

Kenya, along with Somalia and Ethiopia, separately condemned the violence in Sudan and reaffirmed their commitment to protecting their citizens and promoting peace and stability across the region.
