Kismayo, Somalia – The Ministry of Interior Affairs of Jubbaland has formally warned its citizens against registering for or adopting Somalia’s National Identification Card (NIRA ID), stating that it conflicts with Jubbaland’s laws and sovereignty.In an official press statement issued today, the ministry declared that any identification process or system not agreed upon through a formal legal framework is not recognized within Jubbaland. The ministry further asserted that the National ID card is seen as a politically motivated initiative.“We recognize that the National ID card is designed to serve political interests,” the ministry stated, emphasizing its stance that Jubbaland remains committed to protecting its legal and administrative frameworks.The statement also instructed all citizens across Jubbaland’s territories to refrain from participating in any activities that contravene Jubbaland’s laws and governance structures. The ministry urged the public to remain vigilant and to adhere strictly to local legal systems to avoid creating unnecessary tensions or legal conflicts.With this announcement, Jubbaland becomes the second federal member state—after Puntland—to officially reject or refuse to recognize the National ID initiative promoted by the Federal Government of Somalia.
