Nairobi, Kenya(Mogadishu24) President William Ruto chaired the final Cabinet meeting of 2024 on Tuesday, where significant decisions were made to address femicide, improve public transport, revitalize the University of Nairobi, and stabilize the economy through energy procurement reforms.The Cabinet approved the establishment of a Presidential Working Group to tackle the rising crisis of femicide. The group will engage religious leaders, parents, schools, and security agencies to identify legal, enforcement, and societal gaps contributing to the issue. The team, to be gazetted with clear terms of reference, will deliver actionable recommendations within 90 days.The Cabinet also approved the Assumption of Office of President and Transition of Executive Authority Bill, 2024, to ensure smooth presidential transitions. The proposed law consolidates transition processes, introduces penalties for obstruction, and provides enhanced security arrangements for the President-elect and Deputy President-elect.To address transportation challenges in Nairobi, the Cabinet approved the implementation of the Clean Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) System. The first phase of Core Line 3, covering 12.4 kilometers from Kenyatta National Hospital to Dandora, will feature electric buses, cashless fare collection, and real-time passenger tracking. Managed by the Nairobi Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (NaMATA), the system is projected to serve 357,000 passengers daily by 2035.The Cabinet further approved the University of Nairobi Transformation Strategy to address financial challenges and declining performance. The strategy, developed under President Ruto’s directive, focuses on eight strategic objectives, including innovation, artificial intelligence, and health research. It aims to stabilize finances and restore the university’s position as a leading academic institution.To ensure economic stability, the Cabinet extended the Government-to-Government (G-to-G) arrangement for importing refined petroleum products, which has eased dollar demand, stabilized exchange rates, and reduced fuel prices.President Ruto praised the Cabinet’s efforts, emphasizing the government’s focus on transformation and leadership:“It is not about some people, but all the people of Kenya,” he concluded.
