Nairobi, Kenya – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kenya has confirmed that the planned opening of a Somaliland representative office in Nairobi on May 27, 2025, is not feasible and that the Kenyan government does not approve of the move.In an official statement issued on May 26, 2025, the ministry stated that the office has not received formal authorization from the Kenyan government. It emphasized that granting diplomatic status to such an office is not legally recognized and cannot be permitted.“Its investiture of the status of a Diplomatic Office does not enjoy the imprimatur of the Republic of Kenya and cannot be allowed to proceed.” Ministry stated.The ministry reiterated Kenya’s commitment to upholding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia, recognizing the federal government as the sole legitimate authority responsible for the country’s affairs.The statement further noted that Kenya values its relations with Somaliland and other Somali regional administrations and is committed to promoting cooperation in peace, security, trade, and development—always respecting Somalia’s sovereignty and consulting with the federal government.This statement comes as Somaliland plans to inaugurate a new building in Kenya, which it claims will serve as its embassy in Nairobi.
