MOGADISHU, Somalia – The Ministry of Education, Culture, and Higher Learning has issued an order for the evacuation of 14 schools in the Banaadir region, which are currently being used as temporary shelters, to restore them as operational, tuition-free educational institutions.The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Hassan Mohamed Ali (Taata), stated today that these schools are government-owned properties presently serving as shelters and are not functioning as educational facilities.The list of schools includes well-known institutions such as General Daauud School in Yaaqshiid district, Maxamuud Ahmed Ali School in Karan district, and 14 February School.“We want the current occupants of these 14 schools to vacate. The funding for renovations is secured, and the schools are ready. We are informing the occupants to prepare for evacuation so that the schools can be rebuilt and utilized by September,” Hassan Mohamed Ali said.He said the plan is to reactivate these schools by September, allowing children—especially those unable to afford private education—to attend tuition-free schools.The Permanent Secretary added that the government is committed to restoring free education by providing qualified teachers and effective school administration. Currently, the Banaadir region hosts approximately 40 to 42 tuition-free schools, with plans underway to expand this service to other regions in Somalia.
