Mogadishu – In a move to bolster the ongoing development initiatives in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu Mayor Mohamed Ahmed Amir convened with Turkish Ambassador Alper Aktaş at the Mogadishu Municipal Council building. The meeting, aimed at reinforcing the collaborative efforts between Somalia and Turkey, centered on enhancing the bilateral relationship and expediting Turkish-led development projects throughout the Banadir region.

Mayor Amir expressed his appreciation for Turkey’s robust support, which has been crucial in the reconstruction and development of Mogadishu following decades of civil strife. He highlighted the critical contributions Turkey has made, particularly in rebuilding key infrastructures such as roads, hospitals, and schools, which have significantly improved the daily lives of Somali citizens.

The discussion also extended to the renewal of cooperation agreements between Mogadishu and several Turkish cities, which have previously facilitated technological and logistical support to Somalia. These partnerships have been vital in the transfer of knowledge and resources, contributing to Mogadishu’s urban and economic revival.

A significant portion of the dialogue focused on youth empowerment through the initiation of new employment opportunities and vocational training programs. These initiatives aim to equip the Somali youth with necessary skills in various trades, thereby fostering self-reliance and economic independence.

Further, Mayor Amir and Ambassador Aktaş explored strategies to enhance Mogadishu’s cityscape, including the rehabilitation of public spaces, improvement of water management systems, and the restoration of historical sites. These efforts are expected to improve public health, boost tourism, and preserve Mogadishu’s cultural heritage.

Ambassador Aktaş reiterated Turkey’s commitment to assisting Somalia on its path to stability and prosperity. He emphasized Turkey’s strategic interest in supporting the Horn of Africa nation, underscoring the importance of stability in Somalia for regional security.

The meeting concluded with both parties agreeing to a set of actionable steps to advance their shared goals, including setting up joint committees to oversee the implementation of the agreed projects and regular follow-up meetings to ensure progress.
