Mogadishu, May 3, 2025 – A group of 24 MPs has been reinstated to attend parliamentary sessions just three days after being suspended. The decision raises questions about whether the reversal was truly necessary.

A letter issued today from the office of the Acting Speaker of the House of the People—who is also the Second Deputy Speaker of the Federal Parliament of Somalia Abdullahi Cumar Abshir—approved the return of the previously suspended MPs after taking into account recommendations and special appeals made by some members of Parliament.

These MPs were originally suspended on April 30, 2025, by Speaker Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur (Adan Madobe), following allegations of their involvement in a physical altercation that occurred inside the parliamentary chamber.

The initial suspension letter stated that the MPs had violated Articles 14, 16, and 28 of the Parliament’s Rules of Procedure, which relate to the conduct and discipline of members.

Although the exact reason for today’s reversal has not been officially clarified, the move coincides with the cancellation of today’s planned parliamentary session. No official explanation was given for the cancellation, although previous sessions have been called off due to a lack of quorum.

This development comes amid an ongoing political crisis within Parliament, centered around a motion to remove the Speaker following his decision to revoke the membership of MP Abdullahi Hashi Abiib over unexcused absences.
