Yaoundé(Mogadishu24)-The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has thrown its support behind Djibouti’s Foreign Minister, Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, as a candidate for the African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson position for the 2025-2029 term.This endorsement was unanimously adopted during the 50th session of the Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs, held in Yaoundé, Cameroon, on 29-30 August 2024.The OIC’s backing provides a significant boost to Youssouf’s campaign, underscoring his strong support within the Islamic community and bolstering Djibouti’s growing influence on the international stage. Youssouf is now positioned as a leading contender in the race for the AUC Chairperson role.The election, set for 2025, has attracted several candidates, including those from Kenya, Mauritius, and Madagascar. The OIC’s endorsement of Youssouf follows a recent expression of support by some East African Community leaders for Kenya’s candidate, Raila Odinga.The race for the top AU position is shaping up to be highly competitive, with key regional and international endorsements playing a crucial role.
