MOGADISHU, Somalia – More than 70 members of the Al-Shabaab militant group were killed during a major joint military operation conducted by the Somali National Army (SNA) and local Macawisley forces along the border between Hiraan and Middle Shabelle regions, according to the Federal Government of Somalia.

In a statement issued on May 18, 2025, the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism reported that the fighting lasted for 48 hours, during which the allied forces repelled a coordinated Al-Shabaab offensive aimed at expanding its presence in these strategically vital areas.

The government praised the bravery and determination of the SNA troops and the local fighters from Hiraan for their resilience in confronting the group.

“The Federal Government of Somalia commends the Somali National Army and the courageous fighters of Hiraan for their bravery, resolve, and decisive action in dealing a significant blow to the terrorist organization,” the statement read.

Authorities also confirmed the seizure of important weapons from the militants during the operation and reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to eradicating the group and securing lasting peace and stability across the country.

The regions of Hiraan and Middle Shabelle have been frontlines in the ongoing offensive against Al-Shabaab, with joint military and community-led forces sustaining pressure on the group in recent months.
