Mogadishu – More than 100 members from both the House of the People and the Upper House of Somalia’s Federal Parliament have jointly issued a press statement condemning recent actions taken by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. They described these actions as severely undermining the unity of the nation.

The parliamentarians accused the president of dismantling the National Consultative Forum, following his opposition to the administrations of Puntland and Jubaland. They also allege that the remaining regional administrations were coerced into joining the president’s political party, the Justice and Solidarity Party (JSP).

The statement clearly highlighted that the country’s political and security situation has become precarious.

The MPs specifically pointed out that the president has violated Articles 43, 50, and 51 of the Provisional Constitution, which outline the separation of powers among government branches, safeguard the federal governance system, and protect the general interests of the Somali people.

Additional points made in the press statement include:

  • Recent political decisions were not reached through consensus but reflect the views of a single political party.
  • The legislative authority of the Parliament has been deliberately undermined, with the oversight and accountability roles of the MPs being disregarded.

The parliamentarians called on the president to urgently return to the constitutional path. They warned that if he fails to do so, they will advocate for his resignation to save the country and its governance.

This press statement comes at a time when a new political party, led by top federal government officials and some regional leaders, was recently announced in Mogadishu — a development that has heightened concerns among opposition members.
