HARGEISA – The President of Somaliland, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi “Cirro”, has issued a renewed and emphatic call for the urgent international recognition of Somaliland as a sovereign state. Speaking during an official ceremony held at the Presidential Palace to mark the 34th anniversary of Somaliland’s self-declared independence, President Cirro emphasized the Somaliland’s readiness to contribute to regional peace, economic growth, and stability.“Now is the time to end all hesitation and doubt. The recognition of Somaliland should not only signify stability, but affirm our rightful status as an independent nation,” President Cirro declared in a powerful address on the evening of May 18 2025.The president portrayed the day Somaliland declared independence in 1991 as the beginning of a new chapter of self-determination and resilience. He outlined Somaliland’s accomplishments in peacebuilding, and democratic governance—despite lacking formal recognition by any United Nations member state.Reflecting on Somaliland’s journey through decades of conflict and hardship, President Cirro said, “We remember the dark years, but from them we drew strength through unity—not punishment, but purpose.”Addressing the Somali people more broadly, the President stressed that Somaliland’s aspiration for independence stemmed from the failed union with Somalia, rather than enmity. “We are not seeking conflict; we seek peaceful coexistence based on mutual recognition and equality,” he said.President Cirro urged the people of Somaliland to remain united in their pursuit of global recognition and development. “Let us not allow political division to weaken our national interest. Let us dream together, work together, and achieve these dreams for the future of Somaliland and generations to come,” he concluded.Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 following the collapse of the central Somali government. Somaliland has yet to be recognized as an independent state by any UN member.
