Mogadishu,Somalia – The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, has announced that he has not yet made a final decision on whether he will run again in Somalia’s upcoming 2026 presidential elections.

In an interview with The EastAfrican, based in Tanzania, President Hassan said his current focus is on rebuilding the country, strengthening government institutions, and advancing Somalia’s democratic processes.

“When the time comes for elections, I will make my decision,” President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said, according to The EastAfrican.

The president also outlined his future political plans, placing particular emphasis on enhancing national security, boosting economic development, and strengthening Somalia’s relations with neighboring and international partners such as Kenya and the United States.

Speaking about the security situation in Mogadishu, President Hassan noted that since he took office in 2022, the city has seen major improvements in security, with the frequent bombings that once occurred monthly now significantly reduced.

“Now there’s a boom in the city. You can see new malls, supermarkets and buildings coming up everywhere.” the president added.

President Hassan’s statement comes as Somalia approaches its next presidential election, with only one year remaining. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is notably the only Somali leader to have served two non-consecutive terms as president.
