Mogadishu(Mogadishu24)-Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre on Sunday laid the foundation stone for the renovation of Mogadishu Stadium, which was originally built by the Chinese government in 1978.

The stadium, which endured significant damage during Somalia’s civil wars, has served various purposes over the years, including as a base for militant groups and the African Union peacekeeping mission, AMISOM.

The renovation project is part of the government’s efforts to revitalize sports infrastructure and promote youth development. The restoration will focus on repairing the football field, and rebuilding key sections for basketball, swimming, athletics, and other sports activities.

The initiative is funded by a Somali youth-owned company.

Prime Minister Hamza emphasized that the restoration of Mogadishu Stadium will contribute significantly to the capital’s development, job creation for young people, and boost tourism and the local economy. He also commended the Ministry of Youth and Sports for its dedication to improving sports in Somalia.

The stadium was reopened five years ago after an EU-funded project repaired parts of it. Its use for major events, such as this year’s inter-regional football tournament, has underscored the public’s enthusiasm for sports and encouraged further restoration efforts. The full renovation is expected to provide more opportunities for talented young athletes across the country.
