Garowe/Hargeisa – The Puntland state government of Somalia and Somaliland have officially exchanged prisoners of war who were captured during the Sool conflict in 2023. A total of 26 prisoners were exchanged, with Puntland handing over 15 prisoners, while Somaliland returned 11 prisoners.

Puntland’s Minister of Justice, Mohamed Abdiwahab Ahmed, stated that this exchange is a positive step towards humanitarianism and security. He emphasized the importance of reunifying Somali families with their relatives who had been imprisoned for two years.

“It is a good thing that Somali individuals, who had been in prison for two years, today regain their freedom and reunite with their families and relatives,” said the Minister.

The prisoners were captured during a heavy conflict between Somaliland forces and SSC-Khaatumo troops, who received support from Puntland. The conflict caused casualties and widespread displacement, particularly in the Sool region.

The Ministry of Justice of Somaliland issued an official statement, saying the release of the prisoners is based on a political decision by the President of Somaliland, aimed at strengthening peace, social cohesion, and regional trade in the eastern regions.

“The Republic of Somaliland is always ready, with its policy based on peaceful coexistence with neighboring countries, including Somalia, especially the Puntland state of Somalia,” the statement from the ministry read.

This exchange follows a recent release by SSC-Khaatumo of 25 war prisoners to Somaliland without any conditions, which occurred after the visit of Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre to Laascaanood.
