The Puntland Defense Forces have issued a strict directive banning the supply of khat to frontline positions where troops under Operation Hilaac are engaged in battle against ISIS militants.

In an official statement, the Puntland Defense Command announced that khat supply has been completely prohibited in all military bases involved in Operation Hilaac from March 11 to March 21, 2025. The command further warned that anyone caught transporting khat to the battlefronts will face severe punishment.

This directive specifically targets the district commissioners of Bosaso and Balidhidh, as well as khat traders operating in Puntland.

The Puntland military leadership clarified that the decision was made for security reasons, emphasizing that khat consumption negatively affects soldiers fighting against ISIS by reducing their alertness and combat effectiveness.

The statement also made it clear that anyone violating the ban will face harsh penalties and severe consequences.

“Anyone who defies the directives issued under Operation Hilaac will face various forms of punishment and penalties,” the statement read.

This decision comes at a time when Puntland forces are engaged in intense battles against ISIS in the Bari region. In recent months, Puntland has ramped up its military operations against the militant group.

Furthermore, the move aligns with broader efforts across various Somali regions to regulate khat consumption, amid growing concerns over its impact on security and public well-being
