Puntland, Somalia – Authorities in Puntland announced today the killing of eight foreign fighters affiliated with the Islamic State (ISIS) during an early morning attack on security forces stationed in Dharjale, Bari region.

According to Puntland officials, the militants launched an assault targeting local security personnel. However, Puntland forces successfully repelled the attackers, thwarting their plans. Spokesperson for Puntland’s Counterterrorism Operations, Mohamud Mohamed Ahmed (Fadhigo), stated, “All eight members of the attacking group, who were foreign fighters, along with their weapons, were neutralized on-site.”

Minister of Information Mohamud Aydid Dirir further emphasized the foreign origins of the attackers, reinforcing suspicions about the presence of international fighters within ISIS ranks operating in the region. “The individuals responsible for the attack this morning were foreigners. No Somali nationals were involved among the assailants. I urge Puntland residents and all Somalis to cooperate with security forces and report suspicious activity,” he remarked.

Although Puntland forces claim victory in repelling the attack, reports suggest casualties among the security personnel, though the exact figures remain undisclosed.

In response to the incident, Puntland President Saciid Cabdullaahi Deni announced the formation of a Support and Care Committee for Injured Counterterrorism Personnel, consisting of seven members, including four cabinet ministers. This committee aims to oversee the treatment and welfare of soldiers injured during counterterrorism operations.

The attack coincides with Puntland’s recent declaration of a comprehensive counterterrorism strategy targeting extremist groups like ISIS, which maintain strongholds in the mountainous areas of Bari, including the Al-Miskad and Al-Madow ranges.

This development highlights ongoing efforts by Puntland authorities to address the threat posed by ISIS and other militant groups in the region, underscoring the challenges of securing stability in Somalia’s northeastern territories.
