Wajid(Mogadishu24)-Somali National Army killed five Al-Shabaab militants and injured others after heavy fighting between the group fighters and SNA in Wajid district in Bakool region southwest Somalia, Military officials said Sunday.

Al-Shabaab militants carried out the attack at SNA base in Wajid district overnight, but the Army resisted them, defeating the militants according to the military officials.

Al-Shabaab also claimed to have carried out another attack at Ethiopian Army base in Qansax-dhere in Bay region a night before, the group said that their fighters fired mortar rounds into the town’s airport hosting the Ethiopian troops.

The African Union Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) strongly condemned the mortar attacks launched at the Halane Base Camp two nights ago by the terrorist group, Al-Shabaab.

AMTIS said in a statement that the attack resulted in the death of a UN Guard Unit member and caused infrastructure damage.

“ATMIS extends its heartfelt  condolences to the bereaved family of the fallen soldier and stands in solidarity with the entire UN family during this difficult time”, said in a statement.

“Despite the recent Al-Shabaab attacks at the start of the new year, ATMIS remains deeply committed to working with the Federal Government of Somalia and the Federal Member States in the fight against terrorism”, ATMIS added.
