Somali Parliament Speaker Mohamed Mursal Sheikh Abdirahman sitting in a formal setting, as tensions rise over a motion to remove him from office.

MOGADISHU, April 23, 2025 — The Somali Parliament did not convene as scheduled today, following growing political tensions surrounding a motion to remove the Speaker of the House of the People, Aadan Mohamed Nuur “Aadan Madoobe.”

The postponement follows days of uncertainty. Member of Parliament Saadaan Mahmoud Abdi previously warned that the session would likely be canceled, accusing the Speaker of violating parliamentary procedures and suggesting that political manipulation had disrupted the normal legislative schedule.

“After Saturday’s session was canceled, and Monday’s session was also called off, now Wednesday’s session has not taken place — all of which is unlawful,” MP Saadaan said during an earlier interview with Dawan Media group.

A formal motion to remove Speaker Aadan Madoobe has reportedly been submitted to his deputies, marking the first such challenge to his leadership in nearly three years. The political standoff has created a tense atmosphere within the federal legislature, raising questions about governance and parliamentary integrity.

With no official response yet from Speaker Aadan Madoobe, it remains unclear when Parliament will reconvene or whether a vote of confidence will be scheduled. Observers say the situation could have serious implications for Somalia’s legislative stability in the weeks ahead.
