Djibouti City, Djibouti(Mogadishu24)-Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud arrived in Djibouti on Sunday for a 24-hour working visit to discuss the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) Transition Plan. The visit is part of a regional tour aimed at engaging with the five countries contributing troops to ATMIS, which include Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, and Burundi.President Mohamud was welcomed at the airport by Djibouti’s Prime Minister, Abdoulkader Kamil Mohamed. During his visit, he held talks with the Prime Minister on Sunday evening and is scheduled to meet with President Ismaïl Omar Guelleh to further discuss the transition plan.Djibouti, as a key contributor to ATMIS, plays a significant role in Somalia’s ongoing efforts to secure stability and manage the planned drawdown of peacekeeping forces.President Mohamud’s visit to Djibouti follows earlier stops in Uganda and Burundi, where he discussed the gradual handover of security responsibilities from ATMIS forces to Somali national forces.Notably, the President has not visited Ethiopia, one of the troop-contributing countries, due to tensions stemming from Ethiopia’s port agreement with the self-declared republic of Somaliland earlier this year. The discussions are expected to center on coordinating efforts to ensure a smooth transition as ATMIS scales down its presence in Somalia.
