Mogadishu(Mogadishu24)-President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud received Ahmed Juma Al-Rumaithi, Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to Somalia, at the Presidential Palace on Saturday evening. The meeting focused on issues of mutual interest, including the enhancement of bilateral relations and security cooperation to bolster the Somali government’s ongoing efforts in combating terrorism.

During their discussions, President Mohamud and Ambassador Al-Rumaithi addressed the historical context of the relations between Somalia and the UAE. Over the past two years, ties between the two nations had improved significantly after President Mohamud’s re-election.

One notable milestone was the release of approximately 10 million dollars, which had been frozen by the previous government. This financial gesture facilitated the UAE’s support of the Somali government, particularly in the security sector, where the UAE provided salaries for special forces.

President Mohamud had also traveled to Dubai for medical and political purposes, further strengthening the diplomatic bond. However, the relationship faced severe challenges following a deadly attack on the General Gordon Military Academy in Mogadishu, where Al-Shabaab militants killed three UAE officers who were training the Somali Army in February this year.

This incident led to a significant deterioration in relations, resulting in the UAE cutting financial support for the Somali Army and withdrawing security personnel and military equipment. The withdrawal was due to misunderstandings related to diplomatic cooperation between the two countries.

Despite these setbacks, the meeting between President Mohamud and Ambassador Al-Rumaithi marks a potential turning point. While the specifics of their talks remain undisclosed, the dialogue underscores a renewed commitment to addressing shared concerns and exploring ways to restore and enhance bilateral cooperation.

The meeting highlights the importance of international partnerships in Somalia’s efforts to combat terrorism and maintain stability. Both nations expressed a willingness to move forward, indicating a possible revival of UAE support for Somalia’s security initiatives.

This development is seen as a positive step towards rebuilding trust and fostering a cooperative relationship that benefits both countries in their shared goal of achieving peace and security in the region.
