Garowe(Mogadishu24)-The President of the Federal Government of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, welcomed the announcement made by Puntland State President Said Abdullahi Deni on Thursday evening regarding to regional election issues.President Hassan emphasized that Puntland has been a symbol of peace and unity, setting an example for other federal member states.He acknowledged the crucial role played by community leaders and intellectuals, describing their efforts as ‘steps that strengthen the stability and political development of Puntland and Somalia in general.’“I welcome the announcement made by the Puntland State President on elections, which has been characteristic of Puntland. We will support the efforts of community leaders and intellectuals. I pray that the elections conclude with mutual understanding and in a peaceful environment that reflects Puntland State’s history,” President Hassan said.Following elders’ intervention on the disputed one-person-one-vote elections system, President Said Deni announced that Puntland will return to the clan-based voting system on January 8, 2024. He specified that the 66 members of the parliament will be selected by their respective clan delegates.“Considering the safety of our people and the well-being of Puntland State, I would like to announce that elections in Puntland will take place on January 8, 2024. The 66 members of the parliament will be selected by their respective clan delegates,” Deni announced.The state president had previously declared that democratic elections would be held on February 25, 2024, a decision that has heightened tensions in the city of Garowe.
