Mogadishu(Mogadishu24)-Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre on Tuesday expressed strong concerns about the rising tensions between Somalia and Ethiopia, questioning the maturity of those fueling the conflict.

In a forceful statement, Barre emphasized Somalia’s right to sovereignty and its ability to form alliances that benefit the country. He reaffirmed that Somalia seeks support from any nation willing to assist, without infringing on others’ sovereignty.

Addressing Ethiopia’s attempt to secure sea access through a controversial port deal with Somaliland, Barre declared the agreement illegal, stating Somalia will not accept it.

He urged Ethiopian officials to reconsider their stance, as efforts to resolve the issue diplomatically have been ignored by Addis Ababa.

Barre also called for unity among Somali elders, stressing the importance of defending the nation’s independence. His remarks come as tensions between Ethiopia and Somalia worsen, particularly with Ethiopia’s opposition to Egypt joining the new AU mission in Somalia.

The two nations are set for a third round of Turkey-brokered talks in Ankara on September 17, following two failed attempts to resolve the crisis.
