By Sayyid OmarThe National Security Advisor to the President of Somalia, Hussein Maalin Mahmoud, stated in an interview with state media that the list of countries participating in the new AUSSOM operation, launched this year in Somalia, has been finalized. The new operation currently involves five countries: Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, Djibouti, and Egypt. These nations will lead the five sectors of the mission, which replaces the previous ATMIS operation. The advisor did not disclose the number of troops each country will contribute. However, a prior report indicated that a total of 12,626 personnel, including 1,040 police officers from participating countries, will be part of AUSSOM.“Today, the remaining arrangements have been completed. Five countries—Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, Djibouti, and Egypt—will lead the five sectors. Their numbers and designated areas have been finalized,” said the National Security Advisor.Hussein Maalin also spoke specifically about Ethiopia, explaining that instead of deploying new troops, it was decided to maintain the presence of Ethiopian forces, as they already control a vast area in southern Somalia.“The Somali government has realized that since Ethiopian troops are already stationed in a large territory, it is easier for them to remain. However, their conduct will be regulated to ensure they respect Somalia’s sovereignty and operate under the authority of the Federal Government.” he stated.Additionally, Hussein Maalin addressed concerns about tensions between Egypt and Ethiopia. He emphasized that the dispute between the two countries has no bearing on the new operation and that Somalia is focused solely on its national interests.
