by Abukar Osman📍 Mogadishu, Somalia – April 13, 2025Somalia’s National Communications Authority (NCA) has officially granted an operating license to Starlink, allowing the global satellite internet provider to launch its services in the country — a significant leap in Somalia’s digital transformation journey.Starlink, operated by SpaceX, delivers high-speed internet through its network of low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, especially targeting remote and underserved areas lacking traditional internet infrastructure.The announcement came during an official ceremony in Mogadishu, attended by senior government officials. Minister of Communications and Technology Mohamed Mo’allim welcomed the partnership, describing it as part of the government’s long-term vision.“We welcome Starlink. This aligns with our mission to provide accessible and affordable internet to every Somali citizen,” said Minister Mo’allim.Mustafa Yaasin Sheik, Director-General of the NCA, revealed that the licensing process had been underway for over two and a half years and celebrated the milestone as a victory for digital development in the country.Starlink is currently active in over 100 countries worldwide, with Somalia becoming the 21st African country to adopt the service. Other African nations already using Starlink include Nigeria, Kenya, Rwanda, Malawi, Zambia, and Ghana.The introduction of Starlink is expected to enhance connectivity, improve access to essential services, and accelerate socio-economic growth in Somalia’s most remote regions.
