Mogadishu(Mogadishu24)-In a landmark event, Foreign Minister Ambassador Ahmed Moalim Fiqi officially launched the United Nations Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS) in Mogadishu.This mission replaces the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM), marking a significant step toward a self-sustaining UN Country Team by 2026.The launch underscores Somalia’s strides on the international stage, from securing debt relief and lifting the arms embargo to joining the East African Community and preparing for its tenure on the UN Security Council.Joined by prominent officials, including Minister of Interior Ali Yusuf Hosh, Minister of Information Daud Aweys, and Acting Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General James Swan, Ambassador Fiqi expressed Somalia’s commitment to peace, stability, and resilience.“This transition reflects the achievements of the Somali people and our dedication to building a future of self-reliance,” he stated, highlighting the joint efforts of UNSOM, Somali Technical Teams, and supportive donor nations.James Swan emphasized the importance of a clear roadmap to guide Somalia’s journey toward a peaceful, sovereign future.
