Mogadishu(Mogadishu24)-The Federal Government of Somalia and its Partners on Wednesday marked the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation(FGM), reaffirming their collective commitment to ending the FGM practice through out the country.“Today, we gather to mark the International Day of Zero Tolerance for FGM, a practice that profoundly affects the lives of girls and women, not just in Somalia, but around the world. In Somalia, the Prevalence of FGM is alarming high”, Shane L Dixon, USA Charge d’Affairs said.He said in a statement that the U.S. Embassy in Mogadishu actively supports initiatives that promote women’s rights, health, and education, understanding that these are critical steps toward ending FGM. Through our partnerships, we aim to empower women and girls, provide access to education and health services, and support community-led dialogues to change the social norms that perpetuate FGM.“Today we Celebrating Awareness and Advocacy against FGM at our Youth Center. Let’s raise our voices, spread awareness, and work towards ending this harmful practice. Together, we can create a world where every girl and woman is free from FGM”, Abdiaziz Youth Center in Mogadishu said in X post.
