Mogadishu(Mogadishu24)-The Federal Republic of Somalia has successfully repatriated 161 Somali youth stranded in Libya through the Voluntary Humanitarian Return (VHR) program.

The initiative, led by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation under Foreign Minister Ambassador Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, represents a significant step in addressing irregular migration and ensuring the safety of Somali nationals abroad.

The repatriated individuals included 74 who returned to Hargeisa and 87 who arrived in Mogadishu. They were welcomed as part of Somalia’s broader effort to support reintegration and recovery for its citizens.

“This operation highlights Somalia’s unwavering commitment to its citizens and addressing migration challenges through international cooperation,” said Foreign Minister Fiqi.

He expressed gratitude to the European Union, IOM, and UNHCR for their critical support in making the mission a success.

Ambassador Mariam Yassin, Somalia’s Special Presidential Envoy for Migrants, Returnees & Children’s Rights, emphasized the significance of restoring dignity and hope to vulnerable youth. “This achievement reflects the power of collaboration and the Somali government’s dedication to protecting its people,” she noted.

European Union Ambassador to Somalia, Karin Johansson, and IOM Somalia Country Director Manuel Marques Pereira attended the event, commending Somalia’s proactive approach to addressing migration issues and fostering sustainable reintegration.

Ambassador Abdi Adan, Somalia’s envoy to Libya, coordinated on-ground efforts to ensure the safety and dignity of the repatriated individuals.

The repatriation comes amid growing global challenges surrounding irregular migration, with Libya remaining a critical transit hub. Somalia’s leadership in this humanitarian operation underscores its commitment to international collaboration and the protection of its citizens.
