SoohoydeFor the first time, the Federal Government of Somalia has officially secured a seat on the Executive Board of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), marking a significant milestone in the country’s international diplomacy and engagement.Somalia was elected to the board during the second session of the UN-Habitat Executive Board, held in Nairobi, Kenya, on Thursday and Friday. The high-level meeting brought together over a thousand delegates, including ministers, regional governors, and international diplomats, to discuss critical issues such as urban development, the resettlement of displaced populations, and sustainable city planning.Somalia was represented by Minister of Public Works, Reconstruction, and Housing, Elmi Mahamoud Nur, and Somali Ambassador to Kenya, Jibril Ibrahim Abdulle. Minister Elmi emphasized that gaining a seat on the Executive Board is a pivotal opportunity for Somalia, allowing the country to actively participate in shaping global policies and programs focused on sustainable urban development.“This opportunity allows us, as a member of the Executive Board, to have a stronger voice in global decision-making processes—especially in areas related to the Ministry of Public Works,” Minister Elmi said.Ambassador Jibril will serve as Somalia’s Permanent Representative to UN-Habitat, actively participating in board sessions and initiatives. Somalia’s new seat is for a four-year term, beginning in 2025, and is expected to significantly boost the country’s influence in shaping international urban development policies and ensuring access to affordable housing and sustainable cities for all.
