Fishing boats docked at the Somali coast with fishermen preparing for their daily catch amid calm seas.

MOGADISHU, SOMALIA – May 24, 2025 — Somalia’s Ministry of Fisheries and Blue Economy has issued an official warning urging all fishermen and the general public to exercise extreme caution amid turbulent sea conditions, locally known as “Jiidmaal,” which pose serious risks to the safety of boats and individuals at sea.

The ministry specifically cautioned small vessels currently operating in Somali waters, emphasizing that the current rough sea state significantly increases the likelihood of accidents and damage to fishing boats and crews. Fishermen have been advised not to remain at sea during this period of heightened danger.

In addition, the ministry appealed to coastal communities to avoid activities near shorelines, including swimming and approaching beaches, to prevent accidents caused by strong waves and unstable weather conditions affecting the ocean.

According to the ministry’s statement:
We especially warn all small boats to avoid venturing into the sea during this period of turbulent ‘Jiidmaal’ due to the heightened risk of accidents. We also urge people to stay away from coastal areas at this time, the release read.

The ministry called on the public to closely monitor weather alerts and sea conditions and to strictly follow safety guidelines to avoid potential disasters.
