NCC meeting

Mogadishu(Mogadishu24)-Somalia’s National Consultative Council (NCC) meeting, initially scheduled for Saturday in Mogadishu, faces uncertainty as Puntland and Jubaland states have confirmed they will not attend.

Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre had previously announced October 26 as the date for discussions among federal and state leaders, with a focus on establishing a one-person, one-vote election model.

However, Puntland and Jubaland’s absence raises questions about the viability and effectiveness of the meeting.

Their non-participation follows a previous failed attempt to convene the NCC in Mogadishu, where tensions arose over election preparations. While the Federal Government is pushing for a nationwide voting system, Puntland and Jubaland have expressed concerns about the election models and amendments into the constitution.

The absence of two key states in the upcoming discussions has cast doubt on whether the NCC can reach meaningful agreements without full representation, leaving Somalia’s political roadmap in a state of uncertainty.
