Hargeisa(Mogadishu24)-The Breakaway republic of Somaliland has provided an update on its preparations for the upcoming presidential and party elections set for November 13, 2024, amid growing regional security challenges.The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation announced that the National Electoral Commission (NEC) has finalized voter registration verification, set candidate nominations under a strict code of conduct, and ensured full budget allocation for the elections.In a move to enhance transparency, international observer accreditation is underway, and NEC commissioners have been deployed across Somaliland’s regions to oversee polling stations.Despite recent regional tensions, Somaliland affirmed its commitment to peaceful diplomacy and a stable electoral process. Spending over a third of its national budget on security, Somaliland aims to safeguard its democratic process and maintain regional peace.The Ministry emphasized its commitment to constructive engagement to address internal conflicts, noting that efforts to resolve the Lasanod crisis will resume through peaceful dialogue post-election.Somaliland expressed serious concerns over escalating hostilities in the Qorilugud area, citing alleged attempts by the Federal Government of Somalia, in coordination with extremist groups, to destabilize its electoral environment. While reaffirming its desire for peace, Somaliland asserted its right to defend its territory and citizens from any external threats aimed at undermining its sovereignty.The Ministry called on the international community to condemn any actions threatening the security and stability of Somaliland, highlighting that support for its democratic values and peaceful elections is essential for a stable Horn of Africa.
