Hargeisa – The Cabinet of Somaliland has announced the suspension of all talks with the Federal Government of Somalia. This decision was made following the Cabinet’s meeting on April 16, 2025.Somaliland stated that the Federal Government of Somalia has clearly deviated from the path of peaceful coexistence and dialogue, with the arrival of Somalia’s Prime Minister in Laascaanood seen as a direct violation of Somaliland’s territorial integrity.“Given the Federal Government of Somalia’s continuous violations against the Republic of Somaliland and the principles of the previous talks between the two countries, the Somaliland Cabinet has decided to suspend all ongoing discussions with Somalia, starting today, April 16, 2025,” the Cabinet’s statement read.Somaliland has called on the international community to respond to the violations it claims the Somali government is committing in the eastern Sool region and to support efforts to restore peace in these areas, which it says are under Somaliland’s administration.This decision follows the visit of Somalia’s Prime Minister, Hamza Abdi Barre, to Laascaanood on April 12, 2025, where SSC-Khaatumo was recognized as a legitimate Federal Member State under the Somali federal government.The talks between the Federal Government of Somalia and Somaliland have been ongoing since 2012, during which multiple discussions took place with the involvement of international mediators in an attempt to reach a consensus on unity or independence.
