Nairobi, Kenya – May 30, 2025 – Somaliland President Abdilrahman Mohamed Abdullahi Cirro has officially inaugurated the new representative office of Somaliland in Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya, according to a statement from the Office of the Somaliland Spokesperson.

The opening ceremony took place outside the new office building and was attended by Somaliland officials, staff members of the new office, and various segments of the Somali community residing in Nairobi.

President Cirro stated that the establishment of this office is part of Somaliland’s broader efforts to strengthen diplomatic and social ties with many countries around the world. He emphasized the historic relationship between Somaliland and Kenya, noting the presence of a large Somaliland-origin community that has lived in Kenya for many years.

Cirro also highlighted the warm reception extended to the Somaliland delegation by the Kenyan presidency, noting that both sides discussed matters of mutual interest to their peoples.

However, a press release issued by the Kenyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs on May 26, 2025, clarified that the office does not have official authorization from the Kenyan government and cannot be granted diplomatic status, as Somaliland is not officially recognized as a sovereign state.

Somaliland authorities have yet to respond directly to the Kenyan government’s statement. Nonetheless, the opening of the office is viewed as a significant political move by Somaliland to assert its statehood and international presence.
