On Wednesday, Somaliland reaffirmed its dedication to democratic governance by officially recognizing three political parties—WADDANI, KAAH, and KULMIYE—for the next decade. This significant step strengthens its political framework and democratic principles.

A grand ceremony held in Hargeisa marked the occasion, where certificates of legitimacy were awarded to the three parties. These authorizations are valid from January 1, 2025, to January 1, 2034. The event was attended by prominent leaders, including President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdilahi (Rrro), former Vice Presidents Ahmed Yusuf Yasin and Abdirahman Abdilahi Isma’il (Sayli’i), as well as the heads of the recognized parties.

President Irro, in his address, highlighted the significance of this milestone in Somaliland’s democratic journey and praised the Political Associations and Parties Registration and Approval Committee for its diligent efforts in advancing democratic governance.

“Our electoral processes reflect our maturity, the strength of our democracy, and our unwavering confidence in the advancement of our political system,” President Irro said.

He stressed that democracy is a broader concept that encompasses justice, governance, civil liberties, and adherence to the rule of law.

“Democracy is not limited to elections but includes justice, accountability, civil liberties, good governance, combating corruption, adherence to the rule of law, political stability, and the preservation of national unity and security,” he added.

This development marks another step forward in Somaliland’s democratic evolution. Since adopting multi-party democracy in 2001, the region has implemented a ten-year cycle for political party recognition, ensuring consistency and political stability.

With WADDANI, KAAH, and KULMIYE at the helm of Somaliland’s political landscape for the next decade, the region looks to build on its democratic successes and strengthen its governance institutions.
