Mogadishu(Mogadishu24)-The second annual Somali Scholars’ Conference in Mogadishu has been marked by notable absences, with Southwest and Galmudug States boycotting the event. Puntland State had previously refused to collaborate with the Federal Government of Somalia, further highlighting tensions within the nation.

This year’s conference, running from July 29th to August 1st, focuses on the theme of national unity in the context of religion. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, during his opening remarks, emphasized the significance of religious unity, stating, “In politics, it is likely divided and needed for consensus, but it is not possible in religion.”

The absence of key federal member states and lower overall participation has cast a shadow over the conference. This contrasts with the previous conference held in January 2023, which saw a focus on countering terrorism and gaining scholars’ support in the ideological fight against Al-Shabaab.

The Ministry of Religious Affairs of Somalia organized the conference to bring together scholars to discuss critical issues facing the nation. Despite the lower turnout, the four-day event aims to promote a unified approach to religion and its role in national cohesion.

The ongoing Somali Scholars’ Conference seeks to address the divisions within the country and promote a message of unity. However, the lack of participation from significant federal member states underscores the challenges ahead for Somalia in achieving a cohesive and unified national framework.
