Jigjiga – The Somali Regional State (SRS) has strongly denied allegations of corruption related to the Jigjiga water project, dismissing claims that nearly $11 million was misappropriated.Jigjiga Water Project and Its ProgressThe project, which includes 10 wells and 5 water reservoirs, is designed to meet 50% of Jigjiga’s water demand. Deputy Minister of Water Affairs Abdi Mohamed Abdi stated that the second phase of the project was carried out by ECC, a Chinese company, with oversight from the Emis Consultant firm to ensure quality compliance.Corruption Allegations and SRS’s ResponseA report published by The Reporter accused the project of mismanagement, corruption, and the use of substandard equipment. The report claimed that the project, which cost 1.4 billion Birr ($10.89 million), has remained non-functional since its inauguration in July 2024.The newspaper further alleged that former Water Office Head Hassan Mohamed Hussein and his deputy Abdiqadir were dismissed over their involvement in financial mismanagement.However, Deputy Minister Abdi Mohamed Abdi dismissed these allegations as baseless and politically motivated. He emphasized that 51% of the regional population now has access to clean water, compared to just 19% five years ago. Additionally, 13 water projects have been completed in Jigjiga, along with 29 others across the region.Government’s StanceSRS officials maintain that the water project was successfully completed and that the allegations are part of an attempt to discredit the government. The administration insists that the project has significantly improved water access in Jigjiga and surrounding areas.
