Laascaanood, Somalia – The SSC-Khaatumo regional government has officially announced a total ban on the importation, usage, and distribution of soft plastic bags within its territories. The move is aimed at protecting the environment and safeguarding public health.The new directive was issued by the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Investment of SSC-Khaatumo, targeting traders, companies, institutions, and residents across the region.“All traders, companies, institutions, and citizens of SSC-Khaatumo are hereby informed that starting today, April 23, 2025, the importation, use, and distribution of soft plastic bags is officially prohibited,” read the ministerial decree signed by the Minister of Commerce, Industry, and Investment.The ministry cited the negative environmental impact of plastic bags, noting their harm to livestock, soil, and community health as the main reasons for the decision.Customs and security agencies have also been instructed to enforce the ban and prevent the entry of plastic bags into SSC-Khaatumo.
