The Head of the United Nations Office in Somalia, James Swan, on a working visit to Galmudug, highlighted the worsening humanitarian situation, stating that over 600,000 people in Galmudug are in urgent need of assistance, especially given the recent reduction in donor funding.

Speaking at a press conference alongside the President of Galmudug, Swan called on Somalia’s leaders, donors, and the United Nations to prioritize aid for the most vulnerable populations.

“It is crucial that Somali leaders, donors, and the United Nations prioritize the most vulnerable people to ensure they receive aid promptly,” said Swan.

He added that the United Nations remains firmly committed to assisting those in need.

Swan also mentioned that he and President Ahmed Abdi Kaariye of Galmudug discussed plans for direct local elections. Swan emphasized that the electoral process should be inclusive, consultative, and based on broad consensus to truly reflect the will of the Somali people.

President Kaariye, for his part, mentioned that they had also discussed a forthcoming meeting in Mogadishu to address the security and political situation in Somalia, as well as the challenges it faces.
