When Somalia’s political game is going through tough times, there is one individual who cannot be ignored, quickly emerging at the heart of crucial decision-making. Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, amidst Somalia’s strategic challenges, has become a key asset used by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

In the latest political reshuffle, Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud (HSM) has once again turned to a familiar and trusted figure: Ahmed Moalim Fiqi. On April 27, 2025, Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre announced Fiqi’s nomination as the new Minister of Defence — a move that cements Fiqi’s reputation as HSM’s most reliable — and most movable — chess piece.

Fiqi’s political journey over the past three years reads like a manual of strategic redeployments. From Minister of Interior (2022–2024), to Minister of Foreign Affairs (2024–2025), and now Minister of Defence, he has been repeatedly shifted into sensitive roles at critical junctures. His appointments signal one thing clearly: whenever the stakes are high, Fiqi is sent to the frontline.

At the Ministry of Interior, Fiqi worked to rebuild Somalia’s fragile federal relations, chairing reconciliation efforts and navigating disputes with powerful federal member states like Puntland. His calm but firm diplomacy helped maintain a delicate balance within the federation. As Foreign Minister, he led Somalia’s bold initiatives at the United Nations, securing a historic Security Council seat and controversially pushing for the termination of the UNSOM political mission. He also took a hardline stance against Ethiopia’s memorandum with Somaliland, signaling a readiness to escalate diplomatically — or, if necessary, militarily — to defend Somalia’s sovereignty.

Now at Defence, Fiqi inherits a role at the heart of Somalia’s existential struggle against al-Shabaab. His appointment comes as security pressures mount, with militants launching daring attacks closer to the capital. HSM’s decision reflects confidence in Fiqi’s security background, which includes a previous tenure as head of Somalia’s intelligence agency (NISA).
