WASHINGTON, USA — U.S. President Donald Trump announced on May 6, 2025, that the United States will halt its military strikes against Yemen’s Houthi movement, following what he described as a clear commitment from Houthi leadership to cease attacks on maritime vessels in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab Strait.

The announcement, made during a joint press conference with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, signals a potential turning point in the months-long escalation that has drawn in international naval forces and disrupted global shipping routes.

“The Houthis have assured us that they will stop attacking our ships, and we are prepared to accept that commitment,” Trump stated. “We will immediately suspend our airstrikes.”

Trump’s remarks come in the wake of diplomatic mediation reportedly led by the Sultanate of Oman. The ceasefire proposal marks the most significant de-escalation effort in the Red Sea since Houthi forces began targeting commercial and military vessels in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.

A statement aired by Al-Masirah TV, the Houthi-run broadcaster, confirmed that the group would halt attacks on international shipping but pledged to continue resistance operations against Israel in response to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

U.S. strikes against the Houthis had intensified in recent months, targeting drone and missile launch sites in Yemen. The Trump administration had justified its campaign as a measure to protect freedom of navigation in one of the world’s busiest maritime chokepoints.
