Ankara, Turkey(Mogadishu24)–Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced a breakthrough in the Ankara Process, marking a fresh start in relations between Somalia and Ethiopia based on peace and cooperation. Speaking at a joint press conference with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, President Erdoğan emphasized Türkiye’s commitment to ensuring peace and stability in the Horn of Africa.

“We have reached an important stage in the Ankara Process, which we launched about eight months ago as a result of the confidence that Somalia and Ethiopia have placed in our country. By overcoming certain resentments and misunderstandings, we have taken the first step towards a fresh start,” President Erdoğan said during the press conference at the Presidential Complex in Ankara.

A Shared Vision for Stability and Prosperity

President Erdoğan underscored Türkiye’s principled stance on respecting the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrityof countries, highlighting the importance of achieving lasting peace in the region.

“The joint declaration focuses on the future, not the past, and records the principles that these two friendly countries will build from now on,” Erdoğan stated, praising the constructive attitudes of both Somalia and Ethiopia.

The mediation process, which involved two rounds of foreign ministers’ meetings in Ankara and at the Turkish House in New York during the UN General Assembly, culminated in the joint declaration that paves the way for enhanced cooperation and economic development.

Ethiopia’s Access to the Sea and Regional Cooperation

Addressing Ethiopia’s longstanding ambition for sea access, President Erdoğan expressed optimism that Somalia and Ethiopia will move forward on this matter with mutual understanding.

“Especially in line with Ethiopia’s demands for sea access, I believe that Sheikh Mohamud will give the necessary interest and support. This world is enough for all of us. We will take the necessary steps together,” Erdoğan added.

Commitment to Future Generations

President Erdoğan highlighted the historical and cultural importance of the Horn of Africa, a region that has faced significant challenges but also displayed resilience and wisdom.

“The joint declaration will serve as a solid foundation for cooperation, economic development, and prosperity on the basis of mutual respect. From now on, we will implement projects that will enhance the peace and prosperity of the people in the region,” he affirmed.

A New Chapter in the Horn of Africa

The joint declaration marks a significant step forward in resolving tensions that began in January 2024 after Ethiopia signed a controversial port deal with Somaliland, a move that strained relations with Somalia. Türkiye’s mediation reflects its growing role as a key diplomatic partner in Africa.

President Erdoğan concluded by thanking President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed for their vision and dedication to achieving this agreement, describing it as a historic milestone for the Horn of Africa.

The agreement sets the stage for future cooperation, with both Somalia and Ethiopia committing to dialogue, shared economic growth, and regional stability under Türkiye’s continued facilitation.
