Al-Shabaab continues to demonstrate both the “will and capability to attack U.S. and partner forces,” according to a statement from U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM). The Somali-based terrorist group poses a “threat to U.S. and international security interests both in and outside the continent of Africa,” AFRICOM warned, underscoring the group’s persistent danger to regional and global stability.

In response to this growing threat, AFRICOM conducted a collective self-defense airstrike at the request of the Federal Government of Somalia. The December 31, 2024, operation targeted al-Shabaab militants in Beer Xaani, Somalia, approximately 35 kilometers northwest of Cooperative Security Location Kismayo.

“The initial post-strike assessment indicated the airstrike killed 10 al-Shabaab militants while no civilians were harmed,” the statement confirmed. In addition to the strike, U.S. forces supported Somali soldiers by evacuating personnel who were attacked while fighting al-Shabaab.

“Protecting civilians remains a vital part of the command’s operations to promote a more secure and stable Africa,” AFRICOM stressed. The command emphasized that all measures were taken to prevent civilian casualties during the operation, aligning with its broader goal of fostering stability in the region.

AFRICOM stated that its efforts, conducted alongside the Federal Government of Somalia and Somali Armed Forces, are aimed at “preventing al-Shabaab’s advancements in planning and conducting attacks in the region, which disproportionately harm civilians.”

The statement reaffirmed that AFRICOM will “continue to assess the results of this airstrike” and provide updates as appropriate. Specific details about the units and assets involved remain undisclosed to “ensure operational security.“

AFRICOM’s message highlights its resolve to counter the ongoing threat posed by al-Shabaab. By partnering with Somali forces and other international allies, the U.S. remains steadfast in its mission to “respond to crises, counter malign actors, and strengthen security forces to advance U.S. national interests and promote regional security, stability, and prosperity.”
