Mogadishu(Mogadishu24)-The U.S. Embassy in Somalia has launched a two-day training session organized by the National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) to enhance the capacity and professionalism of Somali journalists. This initiative is part of a larger program funded by the U.S. Embassy, aimed at training over 200 journalists this year.The training session underscored the U.S. commitment to supporting Somali media. This effort follows a successful U.S.-funded event on World Press Freedom Day, which focused on the media’s role in addressing climate change.The U.S. Embassy’s support extends beyond training to include funding for civil society organizations that work to increase the representation of women journalists. “Journalists are the eyes and ears of the people, uncovering truths and holding power to account,” the embassy highlighted.Recognizing the challenges Somali journalists face, including arrests and intimidation, the U.S. Embassy expressed concern over actions that undermine democracy. The embassy praised NUSOJ and other civil society groups for their resilience in advocating for justice and transparency.The U.S. Embassy emphasized the importance of transparency in governance and a free press, urging the Somali government to collaborate with civil society to address issues related to the Somalia Media Council and the Official Information Bill.Reaffirming its commitment, the United States stands firmly in support of Somalia’s journey towards freedom, transparency, and democracy, recognizing the vital role of journalists and civil society in building a stable and prosperous future.
