Mogadishu, Somalia – The United Arab Emirates has made a significant humanitarian contribution to Somalia by delivering 700 tons of food aid, targeting over 150,000 families currently suffering from one of the worst droughts in the region’s history. This substantial aid package was distributed in collaboration with Somalia’s National Disaster Management Agency and marks a critical step in international efforts to address the severe food scarcity affecting the Horn of Africa.

The food aid, consisting of essential staples, was officially received in a ceremony in Mogadishu, attended by key figures including the UAE Ambassador to Somalia. The Ambassador emphasized the UAE’s commitment to supporting the Somali people during these trying times, especially with the approach of Ramadan, when these provisions are even more crucial.

The distribution of aid has been strategically planned to cover the most affected areas, with 300 tons allocated to Kismayo, 200 tons to Bosaso, and the remainder divided among Hirshabelle, Galmudug, Benadir, and South West regions. Each of these areas has been severely hit by the ongoing drought, which has devastated local communities and crippled the agricultural sector.

The head of Somalia’s Disaster Management Agency highlighted the timeliness and importance of the UAE’s aid, pointing out that it arrived at a moment when Somalia is grappling with escalating humanitarian needs due to prolonged drought conditions. The official also noted that this assistance is part of a broader international call to action to provide relief and support resilience in Somali communities.
