Mogadishu(Mogadishu24)-The United Kingdom has announced a £5 million contribution to the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS) to bolster the Somali Security Forces (SSF).

This funding will provide non-lethal support, including food rations, communication equipment, and medical evacuation capabilities, enabling the SSF to conduct joint operations with the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).

The UK’s latest contribution to the UNSOS SSF Trust Fund is part of its ongoing commitment to Somalia’s security and stability. British Ambassador to Somalia, Mike Nithavrianakis, emphasized the importance of supporting the SSF to ensure a safer future for the Somali people, encouraging other international partners to contribute.

Somalia’s Defence Minister, Abdikadir Mohamed Nur, welcomed the support, highlighting its crucial role in developing the country’s security infrastructure. Head of UNSOS, Aisa Kirabo Kacyira, also expressed gratitude for the UK’s continued backing and called for more international partners to join in strengthening Somali security capabilities.

In 2023, UNSOS provided vital logistical support, including over 9.5 million kilograms of rations, medical evacuations, and critical equipment for 17,626 ATMIS troops, 1,040 police personnel, and 15,900 Somali Security Forces, playing a pivotal role in Somalia’s peace and security efforts.
