New York(Mogadishu24)-United Nations Envoy to Somalia, James Swan, briefed the UN Security Council on Thursday regarding key developments in Somalia, focusing on the ongoing fight against Al-Shabaab, IS activities, and the transition of security responsibilities from the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) to the Somali government.

Swan commended the Federal Government of Somalia for its efforts against Al-Shabaab, highlighting that the fight against the terrorist group remains a top security priority.

“The fight against Al-Shabaab continues to be the key security priority for the Government of Somalia,” he said.

He noted that Somalia is tackling various challenges, including force generation, the transfer of security duties from ATMIS, and planning for the proposed African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM). Additionally, the country is implementing stabilization programs in areas reclaimed from Al-Shabaab, with the support of the United Nations and the African Union.

Swan also addressed the transition progress, mentioning the lifting of the arms embargo on the Somali government, which has facilitated access to additional weapons and supplies. However, he reminded entities operating in Somalia to adhere to the remaining terms of the arms embargo established by resolution 2713.

The UN Envoy condemned Al-Shabaab’s continued attacks on civilians, particularly the August 2 attack on Lido Beach in Mogadishu. He expressed concern over the increased activities of the Islamic State affiliate in Somalia, reiterating the UN’s commitment to supporting Somalia’s fight against terrorism and violent extremism.
